Ranthambhore National Park
Safari Zone 8
Quick Identification
An elevated plateau characterised by open grasslands, rocky outcrops, deep valleys, dramatic cliffs, and numerous waterholes. It is one of Ranthambhore's most scenic zones and an important habitat for Chinkara, tigers, leopards, and other wildlife.
Where to Look
After ascending through Sitamata Khora, explore the plateau's waterholes, anicuts, and check dams, particularly during the dry season. Mahakho Gorge is an important biodiversity hotspot and a good area for birds and wildlife. The open grasslands are excellent for spotting Chinkara, while cliffs and rocky escarpments provide habitat for raptors.
Tigress Territories
This zone is regularly used by two tigresses—one from Zone 7 and another from the Mahkho Gorge.
Best Time to See
Winter offers excellent visibility, clear skies, and comfortable conditions for wildlife viewing and photography. The monsoon transforms the plateau into a lush green landscape, while summer concentrates wildlife around the permanent water sources.
Behaviour to Watch
Chinkara can often be seen grazing across the open plateau. Tigers and leopards use the grasslands, valleys, and restored forest, while sloth bears and striped hyenas move through the wider landscape. Watch the cliffs for vultures and other raptors soaring on thermals.
Interesting Fact
The former Kalibhat village was voluntarily relocated, allowing the surrounding habitat to regenerate naturally. Today, the restored landscape supports herbivores and is regularly used by resident and dispersing tigers, demonstrating the long-term conservation value of habitat restoration.
