Ranthambhore National Park

Safari Zone 6

Quick Identification

A distinctive zone dominated by open grasslands, broad valleys, seasonal streams, and rolling hills. It is also an important example of community-based conservation, where local people were trained as nature guides, creating alternative livelihoods and reducing dependence on forest grazing.

Where to Look

The safari begins at Kundal Gate and passes through historic Pali Gate towards Dhoop Chowk, where leopards are often found on rocky slopes. Damdama (Saran ka Patta) and Soleshwar Ghati, with its perennial water source at Kundi, are important areas for tigers. The large grasslands in the zone are excellent for observing Chinkara and other herbivores.

Tigress Territory

This zone is regularly used by one tigress, with considerable movement and overlap with neighbouring territories.

Best Time to See

The zone is particularly attractive during the monsoon, when seasonal streams flow and the grasslands become lush green. Winter offers excellent visibility for spotting wildlife across the open landscape. Zone 6 remains relatively accessible during the monsoon compared with many other safari zones.

Behaviour to Watch

Open grasslands provide excellent opportunities to observe Chinkara, nilgai, sambar, and wild boar feeding and moving across the landscape. Tigers may use the wetter valleys and dense vegetation around permanent water sources, while leopards favour rocky slopes and hill country.

Interesting Fact

Zone 6 has an important community-conservation story. Members of the Guijar community who traditionally depended on livestock grazing inside the forest were trained and employed as nature guides. This created alternative livelihoods while helping reduce illegal grazing and demonstrated how tourism can support conservation.
