Ranthambore uses an automated zone allocation system — you select a date, time, and vehicle type, but the forest department's software assigns your zone based on real-time availability and rotation rules.
Why you cannot choose a zone
The system prevents overcrowding in high-demand zones (1–3) and ensures equitable visitor distribution across all 10 territories. Manual zone selection was discontinued to reduce habitat pressure and gate-level disputes.
How to improve your zone odds
- Book 3–4 safaris on different dates — statistical probability favours at least one core zone (1–5)
- Avoid booking all safaris on Wednesdays (zones 1–5 closed) or Tuesdays (zones 6–10 closed)
- Book gypsy over canter for access to all 10 zones
- Travel during April–June when overall demand is slightly lower than Dec–Feb
What happens at the gate
Your permit voucher shows the assigned zone, boarding point, and vehicle number. Drivers and guides are allocated by the forest department — you cannot choose your guide.
