Mansarovar Dam

TRIP TO MANSAROVAR DAM  – A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Situated in the south western fringes of the Ranthambhore National Park approximately 20 kms from the main city. The formidable structure of Mansarovar Dam creates a walled boundary for the national reserve. A perennial water source attracts birds, both native and migratory to quench their thirst at the clear waters and breed at its banks. This site is more than fantastic for photography enthusiasts who want go up close and personal with nature. Bring along your camera, sunscreen, binoculars and a bird spotting brochure and you will be charmed by the number of birds you can actually recognize and have the chance of photographing in their natural habitat.

The water of this dam are used all year round to irrigate the fields in this desert state. The water beholds some fantastic marine life and if you fancy fishing, the calm surface of the dam proves an ideal backdrop to throw in a rod and catch some. As it is not frequented by tourists, the fishing and trekking facilities are just being developed.  At present, it only boasts of an irrigation rest house at the base of the dam.

As you trek through the area, you will encounter flat grasslands, rocky terrain and hillocks with gentle slopes that form a part of the Vindhyas. While meandering through the twists and turns, you will come face to face with some rare fauna like the wild boar, sloth bear, hyena, jackal and species of antelope. Home of the Indian skimmer, quail, lark and painted super fowl. With untouched scenery, glistening waters of the embankment, rare birds dotting its periphery and a fabulous landscape to enjoy a trek or two, Mansarovar Dam is a birdwatcher’s delight.
